Hi. My name is Gary Oba, and I’ve been assigned as the Consulate’s officer-designee for Fujian province, including Fuzhou city. My job is to promote stronger ties between the Consulate and Fujian Province. I’m delighted to have this opportunity. Fujian Province is an incredibly dynamic region with a long history of close contacts with the larger world. Many, many overseas Chinese, including many in the United States, have family ties with Fujian Province. As the capital city of Fujian, Fuzhou, with its rapidly changing skyline, fully reflects both the dynamic growth of the region and strong ties to the region’s proud historical roots.
Since the first U.S. consular presence in Fuzhou was established approximately 160 years ago, the United States and Fuzhou have shared a strong connection. That connection has a long history—and although there have been ups and downs—it’s clear that that connection, especially with today’s global economy, is growing closer and closer. This new website is directed at highlighting our shared connection. During my assignment in China, I would like to do everything that I can to increase the level of friendship and mutual understanding between our two peoples. I hope that you’ll check back often to see what’s new on this website, and I hope that you’ll let us know if you have suggestions or recommendations. Thanks.
